I stopped in for lunch yesterday and was amazed to find they had 4 pizza on display, after reading some other reviews I was prepping myself for 1 or 2. The smell going in was that of warm baked crust with a hint of garlic, mouth already watering! I ended up with the combo pizza slice for $3.50 and a half order of garlic knots (7 for $2) it was perfect! The Crust was Crisp on the outside, no limpy pizza here! And the flavors were balanced to perfection! On to the knots, they were good, buttery & with a hint of garlic and Parmesan. Pizza 51 used to be my favorite lunch spot, but for the value and taste, I will happily make the 1 mile extra drive here next time! PS Yes they reheat they're food, most places do (like Pizza 51) how else are they going to heat up your pizza quickly? It's better than waiting 20 minutes for a slice! Perspective people!

The best pizza in kc! These boys know what their doing. Its addictive, can't say I didn't warn ya.

Some of the best pizza crust in Kc in my opinion. Wonderful pizza to enjoy on any occasion. We had the tomato artichoke pizza and it was excellent. Our out of town (pizza snob) guests from the east coast were equally as impressed. Speaks volumes to the quality of this pizza pie.

  • Brent K.

sorry, I don't get it. if you like it though, that's ok. smaller slices than Pizza 51, fewer toppings, thinner crust friendly service gives 2 stars.

Finally...NY style pizza! I lived in the great city that is NY for about 5-6 years and I am happy to say that this pizza lived up to its hype. The tried and true test of NY style pizza is to go with a plain ole cheese pizza...Johnny Jo's, ya did me good! Nonetheless, the meat pizza as well as the mozzarella was also divine.

Definitely the very best New York style pizza in Kansas City! I stopped in for a slice with my mom while shopping in the area. It's location is a bit off the beaten path, but close enough to the Plaza to make it an easy lunch treat! They have a large selection of pizzas available by the slice, and the price is right @ $3.50. You won't go away hungry either, the slice is huge! They also offer whole pizzas for take out, with specials each night. The restaurant itself is very small. Only a few small tables and a few barstools near the wall. I think in the summer they have tables and chairs outside. Even if you can't stay and eat, get a slice to go. You'll be glad you did! We also had the chance to meet Johnny Joe and talk a bit about his business and his new location in Leawood. He was a delightful guy; I wish him the best in his new location!

Definitely not 5 stars for me, but it's good pie and the staff were friendly. We had the artichoke heart one. It was pretty good. The dessert knots worked in a pinch since they were out of canolis. The crust had some nice bubbles in it. Perhaps their other pies would make me lean towards a 4 star pie. They do have a happy hour pie special which will save you a few bucks.

This is one of my favorite pizza places. Not only is it locally owned, but they use the freshest ingredients and is clean as a whistle. We had a large pizza with artichoke and tomatoes and it was delicious! Good thing it's just a few blocks from my house, I will be visiting often!

  • Joe G.

So, I gave this place a try, and for what you get, its a tad pricey. I thought the pizza was ok. I didn't find it extremely different, but maybe i need to return to try it. Its been a while. The format is a tad unique, they have patio tables set up and you order y our slice or pie and carry it h ome or to a table. One thing i will say, the pizza's are freakin huge.

Freaking awesome Pizza and the best deal in town. 1 big slice $3.50 no matter toppings. Great crust. You have to get off the path and come here. Just a dive with great pizza.

MAN OH MAN, why did I it take me moving into the Volker neighborhood 2 years after moving to KC to find this place? I feel like I've been missing out! Ever since day one, I've been on the hunt for good NY style pizza and I've FINALLY found it. Sure, I've found some decent pizza downtown, but after you take away all the non-traditional toppings and sauces and get down to the basics, I've found them to be underwhelming. My heart is all aflutter!! Here's how that fateful day went down a few weeks ago -- we had just spent the weekend moving into our new home, we were tired, cranky and HANGRY (you know, that fine line you dance when you're so hungry you're angry about it)... after a quick search, my heart was set on pizza. Johnny Jo's has the best reviews within a 5 minute drive, *ding*ding* they were the winners. I was surprised to see how small the joint was, but then realized that's half it's charm! Service was quick and friendly and as I danced out the door to my car I grew more and more excited. We started the 5 minute drive home the delicious smell of tomato, cheese and charred crust filled the car and it took everything in my not to rip that box open and dive into a slice on the way! We devoured as much as we could stuff into our bellies as soon as we got home and still had enough for a cold slice for breakfast - let's be honest here, that's the true test of a good pie! Since that day we've been back 4 times -- can't stop won't stop (and neither should you) -- now if only they delivered....

    (5)
  • Hayley S.

What can I say that hasn't been said? This pizza is sooooo good. I even accidentally sprinkled cinnamon instead of crushed red pepper flakes, and I still ate that slice and loved it. Plus now they have a delivery option for when I'm too lazy to cook or drive a mile to pick up dinner.

Not bad... However ordered extra sauce, I would say they did light sauce... Wouldn't say it was worth $29

Wanted something good to feed people at work for a little celebration of sorts. So I figured pizza would be great. John answered my inquiry and took care of it. Personally took my order and made sure things were squared away. They even delivered to my workplace close to downtown and on-time! Ordered the El Diablo (special... Check out their FB page), Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato and Artichoke, Johnny Jo Marco Polo, and Meathead pizzas. Man... They were good pies! El Diablo is insane. Very hot yet very tasty! JJMP was pretty much the best "supreme" you've had. T&A was delicious! I think if you had to get a slice or a pie this should be your place. The crust is my favorite in the KC area hands down. The 5 star reviews are not misleading. They have not fallen off nor resting on laurels. They are definitely STILL putting out a quality product! Oh... The Garlic Knots are for real! Just genuine great people serving genuine great pizza.

When they're on their game, it's the best pizza in town. They're not always on their game though. Add some knots and ask them for fresh ones. Don't waste your time/money on D'Bronx, that's NOT NY style pizza, Johnny Jo's is. Source: I'm from New York and was raised on it.

Delicious! This is the closest thing I've found to East Coast pizza since moving to KC. A friendly, locally owned business. Thumbs up

  • Katja G.

Sorry everyone. I just don't like this pizza. Always tastes like something is wrong with the sauce, slightly spoiled or something. Also the crust seems a little overdone on the bottom but underdone on top. Not a huge fan.

  • Zach A.

Great little pizza place! Ordered two slices, and let me tell you, you get your money's worth! Giant pieces! Loved the crust and the toppings were quality.

  • Pete B.

Very very small place, no where to sit. The pizza is New York style, which is sold by the slice, unless you get a 16" or 18" which would never happen since it was me and my 2 kids. The slices are reheated- fine, i get it. But it really tasted like mall pizza. The garlic knots (also reheated) were dry and overcooked. This place is WAY overrated.. Will try something else next time I'm in KC. Also- I thought this was funny. There is a tip jar that says "we ROYAL-LY appreciate tips" The guy who looked like the owner had a San Francisco Giants hat on.. Hmmm

    (2)
  • Guillermo V.

This is one of the better New York style pizza places in town. We got a half cheese and half peperoni pizza. The dough was nice and thin as a NY style should be. The sauce was good. The cheese was ok nothing great. However, one of the best parts was the seasoning on the the pizza. It really added an extra level of depth in flavor.

  • Andrew K.

So the true measure of a pizza place for me is how good their standalone cheese slice is. Can they shine with the fundamentals, or do they need to overcomplicate with all sorts of add-on ingredients? There are some places where I won't even bother trying that test - some places specialize in upscale pies with fancy ingredients, or others just don't look like they care. All that could be overthinking the matter, but oh do I love pizza. And I really love excellent pizza. Excellent things are worth thinking about. Walking into Johnny Jo's, I loved what I saw: Small, quiet, unassuming location, with a classic setup - all focused on the pizza. It's casual, it's utilitarian, and it's very clear that they care about what they do. Johnny Jo's is by far the best NY style pizza I've had in Kansas City. I love that you can get it by the slice, and I love how good those slices are. Crust, cheese, and sauce were fantastic. The staff was very nice and helpful, and going outside in the early evening was genuinely lovely. It's not a garden patio, and it doesn't need to be. Perfect way to unwind. Have only been here once, I can't speak to consistency, but I love what I've seen so far. It's pizza without pretense. And yes, the cheese slice is excellent.

Solid lunch choice! After reading a review in The Star, DH and I gave it a try today for lunch. The two guys working were super-friendly and clearly take pride in their jobs. The slices are big - I still had two, mostly because I wanted to try different flavors. The crust is thin, and crispy, in a word - perfect. We each got two pieces - four different options: the classico, cheese, tomato/artichoke, and pepperoni and sausage; we also added a half-order of garlic knots and bottles of pop. (I normally order water, but rather than paying for a bottle, why not go all out and get a glass bottle of Fanta made with real sugar!?! ) The pizza was great! I could pass on the garlic knots. There are about 7 chairs in the whole place, so either get there at an off time, or take it to go. You'll be glad you went off the beaten path and found them!

Just gonna keep piling on the love for this place. Monday night special you can get huge 20" pie perfection with up to 4 toppings. Go ahead and pick up that box, you FEEL how lightweight that is? You know exactly how baller that crust is, you haven't tasted it yet. Put that box in your car, you SMELL how delicious that is?! Hotboxing your Honda with a sauce full of aromatics. Get through the front door and open it up, you SEE the slightly browned edges on the crust; he may know that oven biblically bro. Now HEAR the crackle as you rip off your first slice. Eat the damn thing already. So gd good.

I'd like to begin by thanking the good people who Yelp for leading me to this delicious pizzeria! I didn't know where to go in Kansas....but thanks to Yelp, I hit the pizza jackpot! Affordable deliciousness is found here. $3.50/slice with several to choose from. I had the artichoke tomato and a slice of veggie. Both equally awesome. This is a thin crust pizza baked to perfection. The only downside for me was that it took me a while to get my slices back to my hotel so they were cold. I have a feeling it is even better served warm! The people who work here are humble and friendly. Drive to the edge of the city and up a big hill and find Johnny Jo's Pizzeria the second you're in Kansas City, MO.

Pizza is about the crust and sauce, and both are perfect here. John has perfected the crust to where it is slightly crispy on the bottom and helps give the piece integrity (so it doesn't hang down loosely), while also being a little chewy with good flavor. It is the best crust I have had without a doubt. The sauce is also good, more for what it is NOT than anything else. It is not too spicy, so it doesn't overwhelm the quality ingredients he uses on his pies. It is not too acidic, so you don't fight acid reflux for the rest of the night after eating it. Lastly, he doesn't put too much on it, so the toppings don't pull off with every bite. He had to train me to not put extra sauce on every time. I love sauce, but realized after eating here that I was using it to mask the crappy ingredients used at most pizza places. When I asked for extra sauce the first time, he asked me to take a leap of faith and try his pizza his way. He was right and I have never altered a pie from there. It is a small location designed for takeout, although there are a few seats if you are just grabbing a slice for a quick bite. John and his crew are very friendly and genuinely appear to enjoy what they do. If your main goal is to enjoy a quality pizza, this is the place.

I am a pizza guy, wen i travel to cities, I find coal fired, wood fired, thin crust, and always choose a margherita to test out how good the pizza is. there is nothing more simple than red sauce, thin crust, fresh mozz and basil. and believe me when I say a lot of places that are told to be good.. .screw this up. I walked into jimmy jo's one day and wanted to try some pizza - they disguise it under the pizza "fresh mozzarella" - but I was NOT disappointed. the crust was crisp, but chewey at the end, the mozz was fresh, and not burnt, the basil was fresh(so many places use canned basil), and the pizza was amazing. I live less than a block form here, and I grab a slice when I can, I am moving away and it's hands down one of the biggest things I am missing about the plaza is this pizza joint. take the walk, go up the hill, do whatever you need to do, this is a one of a kind pizza joint in KC, and it's absolutely worth it.

Bought the pizza here because of the flowery yelp reviews. However, pizza was average, not up to Minsky's, Waldo, and more expensive. Too bad. Looking for an alternative.

Valentine's Day was actually the second time I've eaten at the Johnny Joes outside the Country Club Plaza and I thought I was the only genius who thought pizza was a good idea on that Saturday night, but apparently there were other smart folk since my wait time to pick up my pie was 1 hour and 15 minutes! Nonetheless, I suspected this might be the case and called it in way before I was too hungry and will say like clockwork, it was ready at 7:25 on the dot. When asked if I needed anything else with my pizza, I asked about the cannoli, the sales gal quickly disappeared in the back and was gone a good 5 minutes. When she came back out lightly dusted with powdered sugar and what I thought was a piping bag, I was super excited. Made to order cannoli? Yes, folks believe it. Maybe I got lucky or they always roll that way, but either way, I was thrilled! I ordered a 16 inch works pizza with black olives. The works come with pepperoni, Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms & green bell peppers. The sauce was on sweet side that complemented the mozzarella and I loved the addition of nutty and rich tasting provolone. Growing up in Jersey, pizza to me would only have 1-2 toppings to really let the crust, sauce, and cheese really shine-but I really enjoyed the toppings and didn't feel they took away from the pizza at all. The crust was on the thinner side like I like, but not like a cracker, which I don't like. I really enjoyed the salty, crispy pepperoni and the sausage nuggets (sans casing) was zesty the way spicy Italian should be. As usual, while I enjoyed the toppings, I ate eagerly through them all to get to the beautifully crumbed crust edge-which is my favorite part of a pizza...like a cherry on a sundae. For dessert, I had the cannoli. Admittedly, I am no expert in cannoli, but I will tell you that these were the best that I ever tasted. The mere sight of the pistachios made me really giddy. Eating them reminded me of how I felt as a kid eating a nice stack of crunchy Oreos. They tasted nothing like Oreos folks, but it was reminiscent of the fun I had eating Oreos as a kid. There was no neat way to eat them, so I found myself licking the tangy creamy filling and chewing the salty pistachios at first. Then I cracked the chocolate dipped cannoli in half sending the powdered sugar all over the place and then alternated back and forth between eating crispy bites of the shell with filling or eating the filling first and then the shell. Yes, it was a gluttonous mess of a sight...but I can't tell you how fun and satisfying it was...very much like those Oreo days of dunking Oreos in milk, splitting in half, licking the cream, crunching the cookie and then ending with the chocolaty milk with the Oreo bits at the bottom waiting to surprise you. Heaven! Thank you Johnny Joe's for a wonderful Valentine's Day and for taking me back to childhood bliss. KC Fatties facebook.com/kc.fatties ...

Been here twice now and I'll definitely be back again. The piping hot crisp crust is the difference-maker. I also enjoy the authentic feel of the place, with glass pop bottles and family pictures on the wall. Most folks do carryout but there are a couple barstools inside and a table and a half outside if you want to grab a slice and stay. This gets 4 stars instead of 5 because the selection for ordering by the slice can be limited at times. There was only two choices on this last visit (cheese or pepp/sausage.) However I do understand the reasoning for limiting ready-made product at a smaller business, esp in the middle of the week. You can bypass this whole issue by calling in your order for a whole pizza in advance. Either way, come grab a slice. You'll be glad you did.

There is a reason why this teeny place has over 50 reviews and still five stars - the pizza is freaking amazing. Seriously, it's a contender for best in the metro. One time we ordered a whole pizza to-go (Monday night deal!) but usually I'm too hungry to wait, so I hit up whatever slice selection they have in the glass display. I'm a pizza purist and the cheese slice is phenomenal. You know how cheese can kinda turn plastic-y and weird when it cools? Johnny Jo's cheese somehow stays melty and gooey and delicious the entire time until you munch your way to the crunchy-chewy crust. I would burn the roof of my mouth a million times over for Johnny Jo's. Oh and the man himself has been there every time I've been in. He spins the dough and makes all the pizzas himself while chatting with you about the Royals. PRO TIP: it's BYOB! There isn't much seating, but this is NYC-style pizza and you aren't supposed to sit down anyways. My boyfriend and I frequently grab a six-pack of any Great Divide brew and chill outside in silence as we stuff our bellies with pizza and beer. It's perfect.

As My girlfriend & I are in the process of joining an established family restaurant that has pizza on the menu. We wanted to get ideas & inspiration from other pizza restaurants in the KC area. With Johnny Jo's we found both! For a small building, Johnny Jo's has utilized every inch in order to provide patrons with KC'S best pizza. The only guy working when we came in was busting his butt, cranking out 6+ pies solo, and still managed to answer the phone, take orders, make, bake and box up awesome pizza. Fresh ingredients continue to make the best product. We ordered a 16" "The Works" & a couple of Coca-Cola and anxiously awaited the delivery of our pie. Our time waiting was well worth it. Our pie was awesome! This meal was worth the time I'll need to spend on a treadmill to burn it off. We made a stop at the store on the way home, & when we got back in the car, we got to smell that awesome pizza again! I wish I could package that smell into a car air freshener! This place is a must for everybody.

This place lives up to the reviews. Great Monday night special on a twenty inch pie, 4 toppings for twenty dollars. Got the classic and it was perfect, from the thin crust to the toppings. Will be back the next time I am in the KC area.

Very good quality and lots of vegetarian toppings. The crust was good. this place is a good place for takeout as there are not a lot of seating options. Very similar to NY style pizzas.

  • John B.

It's all about the crust. Any true pizza aficionado knows that a pizza is defined by its crust. This is nearly perfect NY style. Everything about the pizza is perfect except for the slice size. I can't quite do two slices, but one just isn't quite enough. The seating arrangements are less than desirable, but I think that keeps this place as a true diamond in the rough. I do not want this secret to get out.

Tried this place for the first time last night, I would recommend ordering out on a Monday night, as they have specials that bring the price of the pie down quite significantly ! ( I think I may have had sticker shock when I saw $29.95 for a pizza ) With the above deal, We paid $21.95 for a large "the works" pizza and it was delicious! I would definitely order out again on (a Monday night ).

I've been twice to this establishment during lunch and I have to say this is one of the best pizza joints near the Plaza. The pizza has a great crust, earthy and chewy without being too heavy or artificial tasting. The sauce is a great balance of spices and the toppings tasted fresh. The only thing I don't like is my pizza slice being re-heated before eating, I know its going into an oven and it probably doesn't affect the taste too much but I can't help thinking having it fresh the first time would taste better. It is a tiny place with about seating for 6 people max and only 2 reserved parking spaces so if you go during a busy time be prepared to find parking on the street, also the building is tiny so its easy to miss.

Best pizza ever, you know some times you just can't find the right pizza place, and I just keep going back to Johnny joes pizza, and it's always the best, so if your ever looking for pizza go to Johnny joes. Signed abbey-Jo and joshes son

My friends and I had just finished walking around the Nelson-Atkins Museum when suddenly one of them says that they were craving some pizza. I had no idea where the nearest (and cheapest...) pizza place was until Yelp suggested Johnny Jo's. Thus a trip to this destination was commenced. So you can either buy pizza by the slice ($3.50) or you can buy a ginormous one. We opted for the box and got "The Classic"--green bell peppers, pepperoni, and Parmesan goodness. The pizza was prepared in 5 minutes (oven time) which was pretty impressive. The final result? 8 yummy monster slices that happily fed the four of us that evening. While the pizza was terrific, I really wish Johnny Jo's had a bigger eating area and was more clean. They had boxes of soda and water among the steps and it just felt kinda cramped. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this place again unless I was in the area, but it's a nice little business to support and it had me super full for the rest of the evening.

Tiny pizzeria, big pizza taste: blink and you'll miss it, even if, as I was, you're walking. Wanting a quick to-go lunch on the way home through the West Plaza was the perfect excuse to finally try this well-Yelped pizza shop. Several thin-crust pizzas greeted me through the display case windows, but, bread lover that I am, I chose a Classic Stromboli instead. It was HUGE for $5.95, easily enough for two people. The bread was yeasty and delicious, stuffed full with cheese, pepperoni, hamburger, onions and peppers, and accompanied by a cup of slightly spicy-sweet sauce. I would've liked a little less char on the bottom, but it was marvelous. Also calling to me from that display case were Garlic Knots. At $2 for 7, it was impossible to pass them up, especially since I too hungry to wait until I got the stromboli home. These awesome little nuggets of dough are rolled in butter, garlic and parmesan and baked fresh for you, and it took everything I had not to eat 'em all before I got home! Like I said, the place is tiny. There are a couple of small tables and a bar with 2 or 3 stools, that's it. The young lady behind the counter was friendly and cheerful, and kept me posted on the wait time for the stromboli (only 10 minutes). Whole pizzas range from $17-$30, but $9-with-tip made for a very satisfying lunch+snack. A caveat: the stromboli must have been a special, because on the menu it's $7.95. Still a bargain!

If you like New York Style pizza, more than likely, this is going to be a delicious choice for a meal (or a few if you get a big pizza!). The boyfriend and I decided to get a "The Works" pizza and some garlic knots for a night at home while watching the Royals game. Truthfully, I really enjoyed the pizza... I liked how it was fresh toppings and the garlic knots are realllllllllllllllly garlic-y. YUM. I'd recommend asking for a cup of sauce to go with your knots because they don't automatically come with them. I know they have lunch specials here and the pizza is HUGE. Like, pizza slices at least as big as your face.... (unless you have a massively huge face.... but then again, it might be that big still!) :) Just check it out. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did the boyfriend. We'll be back!

Authentic NYC style pizza that is made with quality ingredients and is just good overall pizza. I'm not going to go out on a limb and say this is the best pizza in KC or anything like that, but it is damn good and a fun little neighborhood spot. When you order a whole pizza from them, it's always has delicious crust and toppings. The slices are gigantic, foldable NYC slices that are hard to put down. I especially love the pepperoni they use here. Also of note, the dressed (i.e. buttered and slathered with deliciousness) garlic knots. Get those and don't think twice. When I go in to just order a slice, I'm not as big a fan. Mainly because, while traditional, I don't really like that they just take a cold slice and warm it up. It doesn't taste nearly as good as when you get a normal, fresh to order pizza. What I like about the KC pizza scene is you have tons of various styles and many delicious options. This unique style is slowly becoming more of a "go-to" for us and I love supporting this friendly shop.

As close to NY pizza you'll find in KC! Their pepperoni and sausage pizza definitely tasted like home (and less grease nonetheless!). Their Sicilian Stromboli was delicious. I definitely will be coming back the next time I have a hankering for pizza. I do have to say due to its small size and lack of decor, this is more of a to go place, then a sit and eat one.

The pizza is excellent. My roommates and I always go to Johnny joes km when craving pizza. Two problems 1. The sausage on my most recent pizza was raw. Very skeptical to get it again(See photo) 2. They don't have ranch.

After reading a recent "Review of the Day" for Johnny Jo's, the hubs and I decided to give it a try. We didn't know what to expect so we got a slice to eat in. We really should have sat outside (even though it was warm outside) because the inside is tiny and hot as an oven. I imagine it feels great in the winter! They have bar stools and a long bar table against the wall and then some tables and chairs outside (along with a pup hitching post and water bowl), but I imagine most people are calling in their pizzas to go. For drinks they had bottled sodas and we enjoyed our orange and strawberry Frescas. We enjoyed our slices, will be back again, but will take them to go next time. There is a tiny parking lot in back for 6 cars.

What's better than living in a neighborhood that you can walk up the street to some of the best pizza in town? Not much, actually. It's not only great pie, but the intimacy of the establishment and the friendliness of the staff make is a fun place to stop in for either a slice or to grab a whole pie to go. Did I mention it's good pie? Hell yes, and very much that great New York Style that's just so damn good. And, really, thank goodness it's in my hood! I love being able to walk up there and get pie for the kids, friends, whomever, and know that it will be way better than any other close-by chain pizzas. Supporting these guys becomes a pleasure to "shop local", for sure. Get you some pie!

Like many of you, I've been eating pizza for quite some time now and feel I have a good grasp on some things that make a pizza wonderful and even have different categories of pizza. Fancy pizza, cheap pizza, drunk pizza etc. People ask me what my fav pizza joint is and I usually reply with, "You mean like super cheap filling pizza that's 5 dollars for a truck load? Or the best tasting personal pan pizza for 15 dollars?" Johnny Jo's has hit the unimaginable perfect blend between being affordable, but also the fucking best. I hit this place for lunch frequently. Its tiny, its on a hill in a quite little neighborhood. Its everything about a good pizza shop story. There is a bar to sit at (no booze, just a bar shaped sitting area) and a few chairs. This is about the size of a QT gas station bathroom, the oven alone takes up 20% of the floor space so its usually warm and toasty on rainy cold days. They have a selection of premade pizzas in the fridge case, if you ask one of the kind gentleman what they are they will run you through what each pizza is and what the toppings are. There is usually a meat, combo, cheese and maybe something else. Pick 2 pieces and they'll grab a slice from the fridge and toss it into the huge pizza oven for a bit to cook it. I can usually get 2 slices and a drink for like 11 bucks which is possibly 2 more than I'd like to spend on lunch but its all worth it when you take your first bite. The crust is thin and crunchy but still supportive enough to eat with your hands. The toppings are possibly the best balanced I've found. Everything is evenly spread and the herbs and spices are beautifully paired with whatever toppings are on the pizza. Its a love story of dough and sauce. They are delivering to businesses during lunch and I believe working on trying to deliver outside of normal business hours but not quite there. There are garlic knots and other items on the menu but haven't quite made it past the pizza.

I've finally found a great pizza place! Yay! The place is super small inside, but really great for take out. There are a couple of chairs outside with a place to tie up your dog. We got the Signature, not on the menu, just on a card by the counter. It's just a regular pizza with pepperoni and sausage. It was SUPER GOOD! Also, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The topping options are solid. I honestly have nothing negative to say about this place. Go and eat pizza here and be happy!

    (5)
  • Dan E.

This pizza is legit. The toppings are fresh and the crust is chewy and crunchy in all the right places. The service could be a little friendlier, but what can you expect when they are slammed and only three people work there?

  • Andrew M.

I would sell my soul to Satan for this pizza. Ordered a 20'' pizza to go with Italian sausage and fresh basil earlier this week -- was past happy hour so I paid full price -- $28. That is a LOT to pay for a pizza but it was worth every cent! I would eat this pizza as my last meal on deathrow. I'm not sure how they make such amazing pizza at Johnny Jo's -- perhaps they sold their souls?? I know this review sounds crazy but their pizza is so good it's beyond belief. My new favorite place for carry out!

Obsessed with their margarita pizza. Have had the white one with artichokes and it's good too but prefer the margarita. I wouldn't plan on eating inside - it's small and not very comfortable. There is another location called The Pizzaria.

What a fun hole in the wall. Came over after running around the plaza and it was worth it. Had the works and some pepperoni sausage which were both excellent and honestly fairly priced. We had plenty to eat. Grabbed some desert bites for the road and they didn't even make it back to the car. Good pizza and friendly service.

Hmmm... Based on all the raving reviews here, I smell a rat. (a paid one, at that) The pizza is good, but to call this KC's best is a long shot. It was a bit dry for my taste, and the place itself looks like it was just thrown together. The guy who helped us immediately sat down and started playing on his phone after he served us. I'll stick with Minsky's.

I'd give my first born for a lifetime supply of this pizza. I went there one time on Sunday. It was closed. I cried. I wish it was open till 3AM so I spend my hard earned money on drunk food purchases here.

This is by far the best pizza I have had in KC and may be the best I have had period. Love the big slices and the daily variety. I highly recommend the dough knots. The people that work there are also very friendly. Only knock is not much seating and parking, but really just a grab and go place anyways. This is a must try in KC.

  • Gina M.

The pizza here is sprinkled with magical cheese and love. It's probably one of the best places in the city to grab a slice. I personally go for the Margherita, but everything else I've had here has been excellent. I love the cozy feel of this restaurant (it's super small) and on a nice day, my husband and I love to sit outside. The owner is always behind the counter and is always friendly and quick to serve. He's very proud of his family's recipe and his product, as he should be, everything here is wonderful.

Best sandwitch ever! Lunch tue-sat 11-2 The bread is the best. I heard them say its zebra(?) Bread. I think. But its the best bread I have ever had. And I love me some bread Ok. Let me start by saying. I dont like salami. Not a huge fan of cold cheese. And garlic is ok. . But this salami sandwitch was amazing. With tomato lettuce red onions the bigest slices of pickle I have ever seen. Some type of cold white cheese. And this garlic spread that almost burned my mouth. In fact the roof of my mouth dose go numb after finnishing it. The size is HUGE so expect it to be a whole meal!

  • Justin G.

Truly phenomenal pizza from a passionate owner. The crust is soft with a crisp bottom, the toppings are top notch, the homemade sauce flavorful. Best I've had in KC, hell, nearly the best full stop. Only issue is the place is tiny, so getting a seat can be a gamble. That said, if you live close you can take it home, and if not, try anyway. Well worth it.

  • Tres B.

Wow. Wow. Wow. So this pizza may be the best I've ever had. Perfect sauce, perfect crust, delicious sausage and pepperoni. Old school NY style at its finest . KC you have a gem here, be proud. Really as good as it gets. But it's not just about pizza. They don't normally deliver , but after a long day of travel, I Yelped up this business, and rather than just say. " no" they made an exception and delivered to my hotel. Think about that folks. Exceptional entrepreneurial spirit . A+ above and beyond service so lacking in today's America. This is the kind of thing you'll always remember and feel good about.

Amazing pizza will make you think you're eating authentic pizza in Sicily. Very generous with the toppings, with friendly service. If you aren't near this location, they have another called the Pizzeria at 103rd and wornall. Catch them at happy hour for a 20 inch pizza for even better prices.

Well after my previous review the owner sent me a reply literally minutes later. He explained the bathroom issue thoroughly as being a Kansas City health department dispute, which is out of his hands. So I'm adjusting my star rating from the previous review and giving this restaurant it's greatly deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

Pros: great location - easy to get too, had a little mishap with order but they went FAR above and beyond to correct things, friendly staff, delicious, non-greasy pizza - probably one of the best I have ever had Cons: none

Yum! After three visits, this is officially my favorite pizza in the world. Best crust, best sauce and best cheese. I recommend getting at least two toppings or specialty. I have had pizza everywhere, no place makes better pizza, not even in New York.

  • Linda C.

What I expect pizza to taste like delicious. Parking and seating are on the short side but the old-fashioned bottled soda make up for it. Great thin floppy pizza with the right amount of toppings warmed in the oven. We had the meat, cheese, pepperoni, and supreme all good.

Great NYC style pizza with a chewy yet crispy crust (how do they perform this magic feat?!?). Only a few stools available to sit at inside, most are used by people waiting for their pies, any other seating is outside which consists of a grand total of two tables. So fair warning, should it be a rainy, snowy, cold or miserably hot day, you'll wanna take your slice/pie to go. I chose a slice of what looked like a pizza bianco with sausage and tomatoes, it was tasty but I would prefer it with some fresh roasted garlic to help round out the flavors. I also tried a traditional sausage and pepperoni and a mozzarella and fresh basil, both of which were excellent. Their house salad was quite large came dressed with pepperoni, olives and cheese and is a steal at $4! All the guys working were friendly and though it doesn't feel quite feel like it fits in with the west plaza neighborhood, it's nice to have an affordable, tasty addition just off the Country Club Plaza. One last note, I knew this pizza was going to be good when I noticed that almost every customer waiting was Italian (and that includes me!).

Earns its title as Heavy Weight Champion of the KC pizza scene. If you can manage to pass up the pizza, the strombolis are bomb.com . All the employees are rad, super friendly bros. Made the short wait for an custom order a good one.

Well first off it 's the best pizza in Kansas City. My favorite types of pizza pie are brooklyn style, and there are so many wannabe pizza pies in town that are allegedly "brooklyn" but come out of the oven limp and tasteless. One "famous" local pizza pie parlor comes to mind and I'll never be back. They should probably stick to sandwiches. Anyway, I digress, Johnny Jo's pizza pies are tremendous, tasty and inexpensive! You can't get any more local than Johnny Jo's - they're literally smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. I love this place and I consider myself fortunate to be neighbors with my favorite pizza pie on planet earth!

I'm from Omaha and I decided to go for a nice walk down to this pizza place not far from my hotel. I walked a mile without calling in my order. Turns out there is no dine in option. I was originally told it would be at least 45 mins until I mentioned that I had walked there. Jo told me he would squeeze me in and I got a pizza in about 25 mins. The specialty was amazing. Toppings were fresh, crust was really good. I would highly recommend it. Plus $15 for a 16 inch pizza is a pretty decent price.

  • Tim L.

We loved everything about this place; the pizza, the vibe and the engaging dough spinning pizza maker- who is also the owner. It's big city pizza with a very small-town, neighborhood feel. Everyone's idea of great pizza is different but regardless of your favorites, Johnny's is well worth a try. It is not cheap but prices are fair. We will be back and I would recommend to anyone.

I've driven by this place a hundred times and always wanted to try it. Don't drive by again. Stop in and get some pie. It is delicious: excellent crust, sauce, bake, toppings, you name it and it is correct. If you fell like maintaining your figure, don't get the garlic knots. They are simply addictive.

  • Joe P.

The pizza was fairly good. Definitely not the best around, but it makes for a good spot to drop by and get some to go. It's tucked away in West Plaza in a little neighborhood, which makes it more cafe style and a great place to stop by for lunch, or to take a guest visiting from out of town. The price for 2 slices was a little more than I'd like, so for the money there are other places I'd probably choose, but all in all a decent place.

I first heard about Johnny Jo's Pizza from some friends . . . they ordered 2 giant party pizza's for a birthday party, that I ended up having to be late too . . . so I didn't get a slice of pizza right away. Instead I waited untill closer to the end of the night, when these dang pizza's had been sitting outside for about 3 hours, so I figured, eh it's not going to be great but hey it's food. HOWEVER, the crust, oh the crust . . . and the sauce, oh the sauce . . . it was so good . . . I ended up eating three slices. So I recently swung by the place to get a fresh slice, and wow. I gotta say, this is a great slice. It reminds me of a little pizza place in New York run by real Italian's. The crust is so chewy and good, and the sauce has some kick. So far my favorite slice is the Margarita - I like the basics. :-) I think I'll be getting a lot of slices to go on my way home from work. I think the owner served me my slice too, he was super nice and helpful. Great service! So glad to see this little neighboorhood gem pop up, I hope it's super sucessful, and will open for lunches in the future.

I run a hotel in the area and a guest accidentally found this place, returned and told me about it. By her description, I had to try it. It was awesome! The crust melts in your mouth. My boyfriend found the sauce to be a bit too sweet, which blows my mind since he uses Cascones sauce when he makes spaghetti, and I find that too sweet. It is very small, but it was worth the trip from home in the northland. We will be back! Thank you to who I believe was the manager who approached me in regards to me being a hotel manager and stated that they would be happy to deliver to my guests at lunch, I took menus and will share this with my staff.

I absolutely LOVE Johnny Jo's Pizza. Have made many, many trips out of my way just for this delicious treat. The pizza is always made to order, so now we call it in before we head there so it's ready for us. My daughter and I never even make it out of the parking lot before having to grab a piece to eat while we make the drive back home. The crust is perfect for folding over and the sauce is absolutely delicious and tangy which makes it perfect for the smooth melted cheese. And you really should try the pizza knots with garlic butter or the dessert knots with cinnamon glaze. Little bites of heaven. YUMMMM....just thinking about it makes me want to head there right now.

My wife and I have been in KC for about 2 years now and have yet to find a legit pizzeria. My opinion may not mean anything, but she is from New Jersey, so it is hard to get her excited about Pizza unless it is the real deal...She approves. Johnny Jo's is the Real Deal. NY style pie flavorful ingredients delicious crust Our go to, has usually been the cheaper Pizza options in town, but it would will be hard to go back now that we have tried Johnny Jo's.

I am from the northeast and have lived in KC a bit over 2 years now. It was tough finding a good pie in KC... until I found Johnny Jo's. It's as good as it gets; by far the best pizza in KC. I didn't even have a Yelp account. I needed to make one just to post how good this pizza is. Quit wasting your time on Yelp and order some pizza. You won't regret it.

Fantastically thin, chewy AND crispy crust. Wonderfully tangy sauce. The mozzarella and basil is simple and delicious. I love that I can just get a slice. Please stay away from here. I want it to myself.

  • Jon U.

Can't argue with the reviews. Johnny Jo's is definitely one of the best places in town to grab a slice. Pizza is top notch. Only complaints are that it's a bit pricey and the hours are kind of weird. The slices are a good size but $3.50 is a bit steep. Four Seasons in Lenexa is a step above IMO and their slices are a buck cheaper. I love that it's only a block from my house but I wish that it was closer to Westport and the hours went later. Hell, I'd pay $5 for a slice if Johnny Joe's was the late night alternative to the garbage they sell at Joe's Buy the Slice.

This pizza is DELICIOUS! I walked in and ordered 4 slices and some pizza twists because I was in a hurry. The pizza by the slice was warmed in the oven quickly for me. Amazingly delicious crust and toppings, and really quick, too. I've been telling all of my friends in the neighborhood to try it out. When I have a pizza craving, I'm coming back to Johnny Jo's. Fo Sho.

This is really good pizza -- best I've had in years. One slice is big enough to satisfy, and it's under $4. Only a few places to sit and eat, so it would be better if you planned to eat the pizza elsewhere. Great for office lunch or meetings, or parties. Parking is very limited, so if you don't get lucky and find someone just pulling out, you may have to walk a block. The people are really friendly. I had a slice of cheese and it was perfection. Thin and crisp under the cheese with just the right amount of crust to add a chewy ending. Perfect amount of sauce (I don't like a lot of sauce, just a thin layer of it). Also the cheese was the perfect amount. If you like tomato sauce dripping down your arms or cheese an inch thick, this won't be your favorite. To me, it was heaven.

The Italian sausage and Pepperoni was delicious and the crust was the best around. I love NY style pizza and this is the place for that in KC! Stop by and get a slice or a whole pie. They had 20" slices with 5 varieties available and only took a few minutes to heat up in the oven. They also have good happy hour specials on whole pies and a good Monday special. I'll definitely be back!

Great place! My first time and got two - a cheese and an artichoke and tomato. The cheese had a great red sauce. The artichoke I added mushroom and it was a white pizza. Both were terrific! The crust was wonderful. Excellent place and I will go back!

We've been driving by for a few months now and my daughter had a hankering to sit down to a slice so we went. We got a whole pie and sat down not realizing the time. The owner was very gracious and the place has a calm feel. Didn't get out of there til 20 to 10 PM but they made us feel right at home. Nice guys, perfect location, we'll be back soon for sure.

I am writing this five star rating to balance out the one star rating that I heard someone gave via facebook. I will say though once and only once the bottom of the crust wasn't up to their usual standards and the guy in charge even noticed that and let me know. He was training some new employees, so, I don't think they had quite mastered the oven yet. Even then it was still good. But I will say this, Johnny Jo's stands alone atop as best place for a slice.

  • Anna N.

Really Really good... after all the disappointments with pizza around here... my neighbours in West Plaza said I had to try this. They were not far from the truth. It was really really good pizza. It was clean, and personable. They are super reasonable in price. I liked talking to the people responsible for my pizza from start to finish. After being horrified with the mouse situation at Da Bronx on Bell... and having a few other restaurants close here and there for Health Dept reasons... I'm getting pickier and pickier. I don't worry about Johnny Jo's. The pizza is not too saucy, just the right amount of cheese and you WANT to eat all the crust instead of giving it to the dogs. I will be back.

Yeah...not a big fan. I WANTED to be a big fan since we live in the neighborhood and the fact that the place is teeny tiny (one parking place) made it appealing. Finally, after saying that we need to stop there sometime about a million times, we ran up there. When we got there, lucky us....we got the one parking place. There was a guy sitting out front in the rain smoking. Later, we found out it was the owner. But it was not the best greeting to walk through cigarette smoke to get into the place. The pizza is fresh....that's true.....had to wait for them to cook it so we chatted with them for awhile. Friendly staff, for the most part. We ordered the Meathead...(sausage, hamburger, pepperoni and some kind of super slim Canadian bacon) and when we tried to put it on our plates, the cheese slipped down into one big glob and fell off the slices. Then we were left with eating a glob of cheese and a piece of pizza crust with some runny tomato sauce. By the way, it was a Friday night and even though we sat there waiting for our pizza to cook for about 20 minutes, no one came in and no one called. I'm wondering, based on the other reviews, where all the Johnny Jo fans were. I probably won't go again. I think I'll stick with Waldo Pizza or Pizza 51. Update to this review: Even though I stand by what I said about the pizza, I wanted to update my review based on a response I got from the owner. He acknowledged that smoking in the front of the business was not the best practice and that he would smoke in the back from now on. I was really impressed by his ability to take constructive criticism. And even though I didn't care for the pizza, I wish him much success in the future!

New place . Love it: FRESH, Simple, few ingredients, Homemade pizza! Nothing like a neighborhood pizza place that has Fresh food. This is a pick-up, by the pie or slice (i.e no sit-down, no special orders, etc) and it works! Call ahead, cause lots of neighborhood walk-in business, and you'll have to wait in line. But this isn't one of the many chains that makes crap processed "pizza "- i.e you gotta wait when your pizza is made Fresh and cooked to order. Well worth it. Love this place..reminds me of when I was a kid and me and dad would wait inline at the local pizza place, that everyone in the neighborhood went to, simply enjoying the smells as we waited in line and talked to neighbors - hoping "our pizza" was gonna be the next one up :)

I'm not an easy guy to please, nor do I have unfair expectations. Been here twice and have to say best pizza I've had in KC. And... excellent customer service from the owner to boot. Looking forward to my next Johnny Jo's pizza pie...

We only found this place because of the yelp app on our phones. Delicious. We got the garlic knots & a pizza with pepperoni & extra cheese. Now, I am not a huge pizza fan, like my husband, but I would definitely eat this again. Even the dog was drooling after he tried a piece of the crust. It is a very small place, but the food is fresh - not a freezer to be found. Fresh ingredients is what makes this place so good.

GREAT! The crust is incredibly crisp, soft, and thin all at the same time! The sausage is great tasting. I decided to write this review immediately after one slice! Going to make it a regular dinner-place. Try it out!

I have had the pizza here several times since it opened. My favorite is the artichoke and tomato pizza, it was great for Lent. The staff is very friendly and you can tell the owner is passionate about his pizza. I love that there are only two sizes and two prices regardless of what you order. You can order by the slice as well. It is a cozy little place. My favorite had been Minsky's but this is my new favorite. I'm not a big fan of St. Louis style pizza and so this New York style pizza is refreshingly good. I have had a lot of pizza in the area and this has certainly risen above the rest. Good job!

This place has a great local feel to it. One of a kind pies and knots that remin you I the easy coast. We live right around the corner, so convenience is key. It's awesome that the owner is always there with high energy and a great slice. Man up and try some El Diablo or go classic with some Cream Cheese. No order is complete without knots. Found this place on yelp, if to are in or near Westport/West Plaza come show this place some much deserved love!

During my last night in town I followed the other yelp reviews for Johnny Jo's and got their pizza. Truly amazing; I ordered the pepperoni/sausage combo which per Johnny the owner, was their special. The sausage was excellent and the sauce was a perfect combo of spicy and sweet. And the crust was new york at its finest. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good pizza. Sizes are huge to - 15", 18", and 20"....I will most certainly be back! Mike

Amazing pizza! My husband's former favorite pizza place was too greasy for my liking. Johnny Jo's pizza is wonderful. Nice crispy crust, delicious sauce, dynamite garlic knots. The owner has always been there when we go in, and he is a passionate guy. Now when I call to place an order, he knows who we are! That's the kind of service to expect from a small place like this. Oh, and it's almost as good warmed up the next day (if you have any left, which we usually don't.)

I'm rounding 4.5 stars up to five here because the owner was behind the counter and, just as the others write, he's a man who's passionate about his pizza. Called and the pizza was ready within twenty minutes. And they were able to turn garlic into a topping in of itself! Crust was quite tasty, soft, but with a good crunch.

These guys.make a great pie !!! The crust is excellent and the sauce is first rate. It is obvious that the owner cares about making a good pizza. I have ordered by the slice and also have taken home a whole pizza..it was all good. The biggest indication that the pizza is good is that it tasted just as good the next day.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
